Field Notes (series)

2024   | Pit-fired porcelain

Dimensions vary (approx. 8 x 11 in)

The work consists of a series of diagrammatic drawings and writings on porcelain clay tablets depicting the artists’ field work process in the American Southwest.

Often perceived as surveying, field work can be rather procedural and scientific. But for the artists, it expands the studio into natural environments and perfuses the artists’ process with the materials’ life cycles. One enters into this larger-than-yourself body, and listens to how matters live and decay. And in this slow movement of decay, one sees a much longer life span. What’s poetic and performative about conducting field work as artists is that one is able to participate in the process of re-making something that is constantly becoming alive.
